Childline is the UK’s free helpline for children and young people in trouble or danger. It provides a confidential telephone counselling service for any child with any problems, 24 hours a day, every day. It comforts, advises and protects. Where a child is in danger, Childline works with other helping agencies to ensure the child’s protection.

Childline also brings to public attention issues affecting children’s welfare and rights.

Offers support and information by phone to professionals, Carers and Parents of children and young people up to the age of 19, enquiring about any disability, syndrome or special need. Parents helpline is open on Monday eveneing between 5.30p.m. and 7.30p.m. They can provide details of specific syndrome groups and local self-help groups. Produces the Contact A Family Directory of Specific conditions and rare syndromes, which lists support groups, gives information about conditions and lists useful organisations including genetics clinics. Produces a journal ‘Share an Idea’ three times a year. Also at the above address is rare Disorders Alliance – UK, which seeks to raise the profile and improve services for people with a child who has a rare disorder.

The Family Fund is the largest independent grant-giving organisation, helping families in the UK caring for a severely disabled child/children living at home under 15 years of age. The fund supports families through the provision of grants that relate to the need of their disabled child or young person – providing the family meets the Fund’s grant making criteria.

The fund works with an annual fixed budget and there is no entitlement to help from the fund. Grants are discretionary and subject to funds being available. The Family Fund cannot assist where there is responsibility on a statutory agency to help with the requested item.

The Fund’s criteria is set and regularly reviewed by the Board of Trustees.

The aims of The Fragile X Society are to provide support and comprehensive information to families whose children and adult relatives have fragile X syndrome, to raise awareness of fragile X and to encourage research. Our support group strives to offer a positive approach, offers information for those diagnosed with Fibromyalgia Syndrome and support for sufferers, their Carers and families as well as those undiagnosed. We are involved in raising awareness of Fibromyalgia both locally and nationally. Group activities involve a bi-monthly general meeting (normally the second Tuesday at the Obelisk Sports & Social Club, off Obelisk Rise in Kingsthorpe between 2p.m. and 4p.m.) and occasional Saturday meeting at a members home.

There is a dedicated Group Helpline, a group newsletter is circulated to members the month in between general meetings to advise of group activities, and we also arrange suitable social outings.

The Princess Royal Trust for Carers provides information, support and practical help to carers. It has 133 Carers Centres throughout the UK offering advice on a wide range of practical, financial and emotional issues including respite (short-term) care and benefits. Centres offer life skills training often needed by carers, such as lifting, handling and administering medicine as well as first aid. They provide an opportunity to talk about the stresses of caring. Advice and information on all aspects of being a carer is also available on the website.

Information

Working Families' project for parents and carers of disabled children supports parents trying to combine paid work and caring for disabled children. They staff a helpline, produce a newsletter three or four times a year and sell a new guidebook of practical advice and stories of parents who have managed to combine paid work and caring for disabled children called 'Make it work for you'. The publication is £5.50 post free to parents, otherwise £15.50.
