Carers UK – New report on Young Carers
Chris Dearden and Saul Becker from Carers UK and The Children’s Society have written a new report based on information from 87 projects concerning Young Carers, there report is available to download from www.carersuk.org

WHO ARE YOUNG CARERS?

Young carers are children and young people aged between 5 – 18 years who take responsibility for the care of another person (usually a relative) who is ill, has a disability, is experiencing mental distress or is affected by substance use or HIV/AIDS.

THE AIMS OF THE YOUNG CARERS SERVICE

·  To raise awareness about young carers
·  To identify and support young carers
·  To work with statutory and voluntary agencies
·  To improve services and support for young carers
·  To enable the voice of young carers to be heard
·  To give young carers a break from their caring role

DO YOU KNOW OF ANY YOUNG CARERS?

Young carers may be doing any of the following: -

Domestic Tasks Washing, ironing, shopping cooking, cleaning
General Care Giving medicine, assisting with mobility, helping with dressing
Intimate Support Showering, bathing, toileting
Child Care Looking after young brothers and sisters
Emotional Support Helping other family members to feel OK including the person being cared for

They may not be caring all of the time and the affect of caring will differ from one young carer to another.  Young carers can often be ignored and forgotten.

Many young carers remain hidden because they are not at home when workers visit.

AS A PROFESSIONAL –

How you can help young carers –

·  Make it easy for children and young people to talk about things that may worry them
·  Listen to what young carers and their families say
·  Have a young carer policy

Teachers, Education Welfare Officers, GPs, Health Visitors, Community & School Nurses, Youth Workers, Social Workers and Workers from voluntary organisations will, at some time, be in contact with young carers.

Here are some of the areas that need to be considered:-

To be Heard, Listened to and  Believed            Self-determination and Choice

Access to services       Not undertake the caring role                                    Education                             Privacy and Respect                                  Leisure and Play
