Welcome to the ‘caringnorthants’ website, which has been designed to help Carers find up to date information easily to help them with their caring role. In addition the website will be of help to professionals to enable them to inform and direct Carers to services, advice, help and support - you will find an array of information in the 'Directory of Organisations' page.

This website has the majority of information we feel is of use to Carers and Professionals, however, it is always being updated and developed and would welcome any related information to be included within it.

Should you have any relevant information or feel that certain information is missing from the site or would like to comments on how the site can be improved please contact:
Jenny Osborne on 01604 624088 or carers@abilitynorthants.org.uk

New Mental Health Act Changes
"Changes have been made to the 1983 Mental Health Act which governs the ways in which individuals with mental health problems can be forcibly taken into hospital for treatment and their subsequent care arrangements. These have major implications for the carers of those individuals. Two carers from our county are helping to shape the ways in which the revised law should be put into practice. Please click here to learn more about the changes and to give them your concerns and suggestions."

Chair, Carers Mental Health Reference Group

What do we mean when we say ‘Carer’?
A carer is a person who is unpaid and looks after or supports someone else who needs help with their day-to-day life, because of: their age, a long-term illness, disability, mental health problems substance misuse.

As a carer, you may help with tasks such as getting up and going to bed, washing, dressing, using the toilet, shopping, cleaning, laundry and making meals. The care may mean keeping an eye on people who are confused or at risk if not supervised, or encouraging them to do everyday things for themselves.

Carers may be family members, including children and young people, who live with the person they care for, or family, friends or neighbours who live elsewhere.

The term ‘carer’ does not include any carer who: gets payment either in cash or in another way for the care they provide or works as a volunteer on behalf of a voluntary organisation.
